Best Baby Gear for Dad

Find the perfect gear for every type of Dad.

Some must-have baby gear my husband loved in his stay-at-home dad days.

With the holidays approaching, there’s no better time than the present to think about the best baby gear Dad will love (especially new dads).

My husband is a baby whisperer. He loves babies, gravitates towards them, and has an arsenal of tricks up his sleeve to make babies laugh. Of course, with five kids of our own he’s had quite a bit of time to perfect his craft.

Over the years my husband has been both the primary caretaker for our kids as well as the primary breadwinner. He’s slipped from one role to the other rather seamlessly and has learned to rely on some staple baby gear to help him out.

From our family to yours, here’s our top baby gear for all types of Dad.

Dad the Explorer

My husband learned early on in his stay-at-home dad days that sometimes the best medicine for a crabby baby was to get out of the house. He became at expert at packing up and heading for the outdoors when the going got rough. For these adventures he had a few, select items he would always use.

For our infants, a front carrier such as the Baby K’Tan is perfect for Dad. It has all the comforts of the Moby Wrap (my go-to newborn carrier) without the wrapping that can seem complicated.

As baby grows, my husband prefers to switch our toddlers to a back carrier. The Tula Toddler Carrier supports toddlers as they grow in both front and back carry positions.

And if Dad is on-the-go with baby a lot, especially if he's outdoorsy, he'll want to check out the BOB Revolution Flex Single Stroller. It's innovative features make it perfect for any sport experience.

When heading out of the house, my husband appreciates a diaper bag that isn’t too feminine. Ju-Ju-Be® Diaper Bags certainly has a number of dad-friendly designs.

My biggest tip? Keep a dad-friendly diaper bag stocked and ready with diapers, wipes, and extra outfit and a few baby essentials. Pacifier clips are a diaper bag essential, as Dad can use these to secure pacifiers, toys, and teethers when exploring.

Dad the Chef

Let’s face it, as a parent you become jack of all trades. Learning how to be a master chef for your little one is at the top of the list.

If baby is used to being breastfed, having a bottle warmer on hand will ease the transition between breast and bottle. With automatic shutoffs, a bottle warmer can heat breastmilk or formula perfectly within the course of a diaper change.

With bottle feeding comes extra cleaning and preparation. A bottle brush, cleaning tools, and a bottle drying rack will help Dad keep all those little parts in one place.

If baby is starting solid foods, Dad might enjoy trying his hand at introducing a new food with a baby food mill.

Dad the Cleaner

Babies are messy and there’s a good chance that Dad will have his fair share of cleaning up after your little one to do.

Having a diaper caddy is perfect for Dad to grab at that crucial moment of realizing baby has soiled another outfit. Also making sure that there are outfits matched together in baby’s dresser or closet will help both you and Dad in those moments of desperation.

My husband is typically in charge of bathtime and one thing he dreads is kneeling next to the bathtub while baby splashes. A tubside seat can help to eliminate the awkwardness of trying to reach baby and stay comfortable.

Dad the Memory-Maker

My husband is one of the most creative, fun-loving Dad’s around. He can turn anything into an adventure and my kids have some of the best memories of everyday events that turned special.

Having a phone or camera handy is essential for Dad for those spur-of-the-moment times that a picture can capture the exciting adventures kids are engaged in.

During naptime, Dad may enjoy having a wireless baby monitor so he can enjoy some downtime around the house while still keeping an ear out for baby.

While most of these thing aren’t needed, having a special product or two that works well for Dad will benefit your whole family. What top baby gear would you recommend for Dad?
