Celebrity Pregnancies Bring Surrogacy to New Light

Celebrity babies bring up an interesting question for all of us to consider.

It seems babies are all over the news lately, especially celebrity pregnancies and deliveries.

Take, for example, the announcement from Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova about their newborn twins, after she hid her entire pregnancy.

Then we just found out that actress Kirsten Dunst is expecting her first child.

This week also brought news of a new addition to the Kardashian/West family: a baby girl. While this is Kim and Kayne's third child together, it is their first child by surrogate, which brings surrogacy to a new light.

While the number of babies delivered by surrogate used to be in the hundreds per year back in the '90s, today there are more than a thousand babies being born each year via surrogate according to recent reports.

Though people speculated Kim chose a surrogate because of body image, she explained in reality it was because doctors did not feel it was safe for her to carry a child again due to complications with her first two pregnancies.

Kim reiterated to Metro that she found the experience of not being able to carry the baby herself as ‘hard’ – something she has opened up about previously. "Having a gestational carrier is definitely different, but anyone who says or thinks it’s the easy way out is completely wrong."

Speaking of surrogacy, you'll notice Kim chose to use the word "gestational carrier" instead of surrogate, further explaining that a gestational carrier is the technical term used to describe a woman carrying a baby she has no biological relationship to.

Of course, in addition to the emotional difficulties that can arise from carrying your own child, legal and other ramifications remain present when dealing with a surrogate.

So it begs the question, would you consider surrogacy when it comes to your own pregnancy?
